The RM 27-02 goes one step further to achieve a lightweight and rugged construction. First, the substrate was machined from NTPT carbon fiber, which consisted of multi-layer filaments obtained by separating carbon wires, and a new material, TPT quartz, designed and developed by Richard Mille in collaboration with North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT). Includes hundreds of layers of quartz wire stacked on each other. This fiber has extremely high strength and is very resistant to high temperatures. The TPT layer, which is about 45 microns thick at the high end, is inserted between the carbon nanotube layers through an automated positioning system that modifies the fiber orientation between each layer by 45 degrees. The bezel, the back and the bottom are made of this material. The first two components are secured to the base plate using 12 titanium spline screws.
In the history of Richard Mille, the strap has been removed more or less from the equation: the bezel and the back of the case are assembled directly on the bottom plate of the movement. When the sapphire crystal is added, the case has been completed (note: the first RM 027 RN has no sapphire crystal, but the Plexiglas example, which is lighter). Despite the use of a sapphire crystal, this technique helps to keep the watch"s thickness at an elongate height of 12.25 mm.
TPT quartz technology took many years to launch a watch because of the experimentation required to stabilize the color (note the fashionable "distressed" appearance of the case). This is done using UV light.
